The Conference "Mental Health & Human Trafficking" was a dream come true and it exceeded all our expectations.
On day 2, we had the honour to learn from global experts like Shirin Tinnesand, Brittany Dunn, MBA, Juliane Taborda, Joy Kingsley, and Kendra-Lee Mills, with a fundamental panel discussion on “Steps for the future, what needs to happen?” moderated by Astrid Sundberg.
On this day we learned some heartbreaking truths.
📢 With Shirin we learned that the Ukrainian Refugees are extremely vulnerable, as they are legally allowed to move to any country in Europe, unfortunately, with or without their consent.
The lack of training and identification for those working in the frontlines of war create danger for those fleeing the conflict and seeking help.
📢 Brittany presented her work and how to eradicate human trafficking, we need to work collectively, and implement survivor-informed approaches that dismantle trafficking networks, empower victims, and address the root causes of trafficking.
📢 With Juliane we learned the benefits of having legal systems that have a thorough selection of criminal defence attorneys, to guarantee proper assistance to victims of human trafficking; and the promotion of human rights for all vulnerable communities.
📢 Joy explained brilliantly how our empathy and practice needs to be culturally-informed and we need to understand the different strategies communities have found to heal. To respect traditions, beliefs and rituals is essential particularly with African communities and Afro-Centric Trauma-Informed Care if fundamental.
📢 Kendra empathised how survivors must be included at all levels of decision and policy-making, and be involved in the development of services that are for them. How there needs to be long-term investment and funding because survivors don’t need support just when they are exiting trafficking.
Once again, a massive thank you to everyone involved in this event!
